Haematology Department, RVI Newcastle

Sir Robert McAlpine was responsible for the refurbishment and extension of laboratories and offices within the Microbiology, Pathology, Immunology and Haematology departments of the William Leech Building at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The work for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust was carried out in five phases to ensure the departments remained fully operational throughout, the project team working closely with the Trust's personnel to avoid any interruption to their work. To facilitate this, two major decants of staff were implemented, coupled with sectional handovers.

Working in a live environment, effective supply chain management was essential throughout the design and construction phases.

The sixth project undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine on the combined site of the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Newcastle University, the continuity of management and supply chain input produced real benefits in the form of continuous improvement in understanding, operation, delivery and relationships.
