One of the largest laboratories of its kind in the UK, the new Pathology Facility at Royal Oldham Hospital allowed Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to consolidate its pathology services on one site.
The three-storey facility serves the Trust’s four constituent acute hospitals and provides 2,900m2 of new laboratory space along with 1,750m2 of refurbished accommodation for use as consultant offices and meeting rooms.
We established a positive working relationship with our client from the start, involving end users at all stages and developing the scheme layout to minimise disruption to the existing pathology service during construction.
Other key elements to the success of the project included: obtaining material samples well before usage to ensure their correct integration, joint management of risk and the use of build element interface review meetings.
The facility is one of three projects undertaken for the Trust, the others being Royal Oldham Hospital’s Ambulatory Radiotherapy Centre and North Manchester Hospital’s Women and Children’s Unit.
